www.delphiquery.com - Because everyone should write at least one "toy" app :-)

I'm pleased to announce this "toy" app a friend and I wrote.. www.delphiquery.com. The app is pretty strait forward. A person asks a question and its voted on for a few minutes. The results are then emailed back to them once the poll closes (currently 5 ~ 10 minutes).

The REAL reason we wrote this little app was to play with MVC and LINQ to SQL. I have to say the experience was very pleasent.. the Jquery ajax calls worked easy to build, and it was so VERY nice to actually know my client IDs inside my HTML . Also With a little bit of routing voodoo we got it to do some interesting things routing wise for having all of our controller actions ALSO available via JSON or XML as API calls.

I'll post more about the whole Actions as API techniques later. But for now.. Here it is, as silly as they come..

64bytes.com is now running BlogEngine.NET

Nothing to major here, just made a move to use the BlogEngine.NET from using SUBTEXT. This will include a few minor visual changes, but most everything was under the hood ;-).

The biggest pain was mapping all the old posts to the new permalink format. This entailed a bit of hackery to the 404 page so that I could map all of the old posts to there new URLS.

The main cause for the change was so that I could use a blogging client to write my posts. As I am (in theory) going to start doing weekly screen-casts; I figure a little better posting experience was a good thing

A little history lesson.

So where did Ktomics come from? For those that don't know thats our little startup in question  . To answer that I figured I would put a little history lesson together.

  • Sometime in 2003 : Co-Conspirator and I begin discussion of really cool app (Sorry I won't tell you what)
  • Later in 2003: We come up with the name Ktomics as it includes a letter related to our project and sounds cool (like Atomics! and power and stuff  )
  • Still Later in 2003: We begin development
  • Even Later in 2003: We stop working at the same place and development calms
  • Sometime in 2004: I continue the name (with permission) and develop and sell several DotNetNuke Modules thru www.Snowcovered.com.
    • They are now open source, and the Wiki module will soon be the core Wiki Module for DotNetNuke. You can find out more at www.ktomics.net
  • Early 2006: I start refactoring that old project based on new technology.
  • Mid 2006: Co-Conspirator and I take a look at the refactoring  I was doing, we agree to kick things off again as its a project that needs more than one person.
  • Early 2007: A client opportunity appears
  • Now: We have a client, a down payment, an active development cycle, a plan and this blog to track thing.

Now some of you may be wondering "but that means you have been around for a while". While that’s "technically" true, selling a few DotNetNuke modules on www.Snowcovered.com is like selling the occasional trinket on ebay or craigslist. Its neither time consuming, nor a business.

And so Ktomics Begins (A.K.A. Welcome!)

Well here it is! My associate and I are embarking on the creation of a new small business. We have our first client, and are actively developing a commercial product. So I figured, why not blog on the event. I'll try to dicuss our trials, tribulations, and techical challanges. I'll also throw in a little bit of regular life and other things I'm intrested in as I go :-).

So stay tuned as we start this little adventure.
